High Performance

Input Performance

Robust Rectifier for Wide Input Range

The broad AC input voltage and frequency window prevents unnecessary battery discharge, even when operating from an unstable AC source, such as a diesel generator.

Programmable Soft Start

This feature enables the rectifier to ramp up over a programmable period (0-30 seconds), eliminating in-rush current. This capability reduces the need to oversize the input power system, including gensets, feeder cables, and overcurrent devices.

Smart Input Filters, <7 % THDi

An optional internal input filter is available for the SG Series UPS. This “smart” filter includes a programmable feature that allows it to be deactivated during startup and low load conditions, thereby preventing a leading power factor (PF).

Generator Compatibility

User-programmable features such as slew rate, phase angle rate-of-change, and voltage rate-of-change enable the UPS to quickly synchronize with a genset during emergency backup. GE’s optional input filter also includes user-programmable features to ensure rapid and continuous synchronization with generator voltage.

Output Performance

Total Harmonic Distortion (THD)

A distorted output voltage waveform can impact the proper functioning of load equipment. The SG Series delivers very low output voltage THD, even when connected to 100% unbalanced or 100% non-linear loads.

Transient Response

Leveraging SVM and the ZigZag transformer, the GE UPS can respond rapidly to zero-to-100% step loads within 1/3 of a cycle. This capability reduces the necessity for oversizing the UPS for demanding pulse-load applications.

Overload Capabilities

The SG Series UPS features a robust inverter capable of handling 150% overload for 60 seconds.

Phase Load Imbalance

The UPS Output ZigZag transformer, due to its inherent characteristics and winding configuration, provides excellent voltage regulation against phase-to-neutral (Ph-N) load imbalances.

Redundant Parallel Architecture (RPA) System Configuration

GE offers RPA, a unique technology that enables UPS modules to operate in parallel with true redundancy by eliminating any single point of failure. RPA provides a scalable paralleling technique that reduces the operational footprint and enhances system reliability by removing the need for external paralleling equipment and cabinets, such as centralized bypass and master control units. One of the UPS modules in the system assumes a leadership role, while the other UPS modules have access to all control parameters. If a UPS module fails, the load is automatically redistributed among the remaining units. If the lead UPS fails, another module automatically assumes the leadership role. GE’s RPA technology is implemented through the distribution of control electronics within each UPS module in the system.

RPA System Advantages

  • No Single Points of Failure: The RPA system offers complete redundancy for all critical components and allows for the parallel connection of up to 6 units to increase load capacity or redundancy.
  • Scalable and Modular: The system can be easily expanded for higher capacity and redundancy without interrupting the critical load or requiring a transfer to bypass.
  • Redundant Communication: Redundant high-speed bus and control electronics ensure higher system reliability.
  • Distributed Control Logic: Each module in an RPA system possesses its own operational controller. These controllers continuously communicate with each other to manage the entire system collaboratively.

Online Maintenance

N+1 configurations permit maintenance on any single module within the system while other modules continue to provide online protection with battery backup.

Sequential Soft Start

This feature ensures a sequential soft start for each module, reducing the instantaneous load on input feeders during mains recovery. This helps prevent generator over-rating and overheating of cables and fuses.

Smaller Footprint

RPA eliminates the need for centralized control and external static bypass cabinets.

Redundant Parallel Architecture (RPA) System Options

Intelligent Energy Management Integrated (IEMi)

IEMi is a software package designed to help RPA systems conserve energy and reduce operating costs during low load conditions. Inverters that are not required to support the load can be automatically switched off to achieve energy savings. The IEMi mode can be configured for various operating scenarios, allowing the customer to define the desired level of redundancy.

Intelligent Sync Module (ISM)

For System + System (2N) applications, the ISM module is used to synchronize the outputs of two modules or two groups of UPS units fed from separate and independent sources. This synchronization facilitates downstream switching. The ISM is an intelligent control unit installed externally to the UPS module. It can designate a master system and exchange permissive signals with downstream devices. Consistent with RPA’s design philosophy, the ISM incorporates redundancy in all critical components. The ISM communicates via redundant cables and offers options for redundant power supplies and control circuitry.
